Why Stories

Everybody Loves A Good Story

Stories bring information alive. If you’ve ever read one of Richard’s books, you know what a big believer he is in them. Not long ago, a reader of I Need A Life wrote to ask if the “Peter” in one of Richard’s stories was really him. Richard’s answer:

If you found yourself in that story, then maybe it was you.

Richard Flint

When you identify with a story, you remember it. That’s why the stories Jesus told are still changing lives two thousand years later.

  1. They Make You Pause

A good story stops you in your tracks and makes you think about your own life.

  2. They Move You

Stories offer emotional moments that facts alone never reach.

  3. They Connect

You find yourself in the story — and the lesson stays with you.

The Master Storyteller

One Story, Two Listeners

In seminary, Richard took a course on the “Parables Jesus Told.” What struck him most was how Jesus framed His stories. Most of the time He told them to answer a question — and the same story did two very different things.

  • Those seeking to learn found a message of clarity.
  • Those looking to trap Him found only confusion.

Switch the listener and watch what they hear.

Behold, a sower went forth to sow; and when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side… But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit.

Matthew 13:3–8
What the seeker hears

A message of clarity. The story makes them pause, think and find the connection to the very question they were struggling with.

What the critic hears

Confusion. Looking for something to use against Him, they’re left scratching their heads, trying to understand what He was talking about.

The Journey

Six Stories, Six Months

Each month, Richard takes one story Jesus told, digs deep into it and finds the timeless message it contains. Choose a story to walk the path.

Matthew 13:1–23
Story One · Month 1

The Sower And The Seed

“Why do some hear the same message and grow, while others never change?”

A farmer scatters seed across four kinds of ground — the hard path, the rocky soil, the thorns and the good soil. Same seed. Same sower. Four very different harvests.
