These Are Going Fast! A Thought To Guide Each Day Of Your Life |
|
Stop Hitting The Snooze Button! We’ve all heard the saying, If you snooze, you lose. I have heard that all my life and never really paid attention to the power those five words express. The other morning I was having breakfast with one of my Private Coaching students and we were discussing her battle between the “Old You,” who wants all of us to stay the same. The “Old You” knows that in sameness they have control of your life. In sameness the “Old You” knows you will talk about improvement, but not challenge your routine behavior. The other participant in the battle is the “New You.” The “New You” wants the ultimate for your life. The challenge we were facing was the inconsistency with her morning workout. During the past couple of years, she has lost over 100 lbs and has about 30 more to go. What a feat! It has not been easy for her, but it has been a driving force in her life; it has been a desire she has held fast to through dieting and working out. Lately, she has really been struggling getting up in the morning and making it to the gym. Her “Old You” is so cunning and smart. She knows all the triggers and the right things to say. Things like, “You don’t need to go workout; you are doing just fine now. Look at all the weight you have lost.” So, what would she do? The alarm would sound, she would roll-over and hit the snooze button. |
||
When the alarm would go off, that “Old You” would say, “You are so tired. It is okay to lay here for a few more minutes. You can workout tomorrow.” What would she do? She would hit the snooze button. As I was listening to her share what she was doing, I stopped her and said, “Do you know what that snooze button really is?” The look on her face told me she wasn’t following what I was talking about. When I didn’t say anything, she thought for a moment and with a big grin on her face said, “I got it! That snooze button is another way of procrastinating.” I smiled and said, “You got it. Here is what I want you to do. I want you to tape the word ‘procrastination’ on top of the snooze button. Each time you reach for it you will know what you are doing.” How many times do you hit the snooze button in life? You talk about what you need to be doing or what you are going to do, BUT when it comes times to do it, YOU hit the snooze button. You know what I am talking about. There are things that have had continuation in your life for years that keep robbing you of time, energy and possibilities. Every time you hit the snooze button, you lose! When you hit the snooze button, you send yourself and others a message that you aren’t serious about what you are saying. Many times others are pushing you to get done what you have said you are going to do, so you tell them you will do it, but the minute they leave, what do you do? You hit the snooze button. Reality is the contradiction becomes just another form of a lie. When you hit the snooze button, you are narrowing your world of possibility. While you are dozing, life is still happening. Every day that you sit with your eyes closed you are missing possibilities that are always present. I listen as people talk about how “tough their life is,” “how they just can’t get their life out of second gear,” “how they don’t understand why their life isn’t what it should be.” The message they need to hear is, “STOP HITTING THE SNOOZE BUTTON!” Every time you hit the snooze button, you lose! When you hit the snooze button, you are really offering an excuse for what you don’t want to face or do. You have to have an excuse to give yourself permission to procrastinate. Procrastination shuts down your creative side and increases your emotional presence. Excuses are emotional justifications. Every time you hit the snooze button, you lose! When you hit the snooze button, you operate as your own enemy. The greatest battle you fight is with you, not others. You pick on others so you don’t look funny shadow boxing. As long as you stand in your own way, you are going to continually get knocked down. That will cost you success. Every time you hit the snooze button, you lose! When you hit the snooze button, your zest for life diminishes. Procrastination steals energy. Procrastination drains your internal spirit. If you don’t have energy, you don’t have focus. If you don’t have focus, you feel lost in a world that seems to be spinning out of control. Every time you hit the snooze button, you lose! When you hit the snooze button, you exit the world of improvement and strengthen your world of sameness. The human spirit needs to be fed! The human spirit needs mental exercise. The human spirit needs to be challenged. When these aren’t happening on a consistent basis, you are slowly and surely shutting down your center for power living. Every time you hit the snooze button, you lose big time! So, how do you stop hitting the snooze button? First, stop making procrastination okay! Realize what procrastination does to your life. It is an enemy designed to paralyze you. Next, never make excuse making okay. An excuse is just another way of lying to yourself and others. As long as that behavior is okay, you are trapped in the circle of sameness and in that circle you will mentally die. Order must be a big part of your life. Don’t talk about getting organized until you have order in your life. Order is the clarity that allows your imagination to see the journey. With order it is easy to prioritize your actions. Open yourself to being challenged. You need people around your life that will hold you accountable. I believe in putting an accountability group in your life. We all need those who will challenge us with truth, but you have to be open to being challenged to accept this. If you aren’t, you will feel they are criticizing you. The zeal for improvement must become a driving force. You have to want to be better. It won’t happen without your commitment, your consistency, your honesty, and you facing yourself. Expand your understandings, adapt your presence and implement the behaviors that will bring about improvement. I can’t say it any clearer than that. We are talking about a process that is designed to deny your snooze button attention. Every time you hit the snooze button in life, you postpone what that moment could mean to you. Procrastination is one of your top enemies; don’t let it win! Stop hitting the snooze button!

A few years ago I was invited to sit in on a senior management meeting for a Fortune 500 company. They had approached me about spending a year helping them strengthen their presence through improving their managers. I flew to New York and was in the back of the Board Room listening as each of the Senior VP’s went over their department’s numbers. I was amazed as I listened to those whose departments hadn’t had a good year. Each of them had a justification, a reason or people to blame. The look on my face caught the eye of the CEO and he paused the meeting, looked at me and asked, “Richard, you look puzzled. Do you want to share something with us?” “Sir, this is such an interesting meeting. I am listening to what each person is saying and find it challenging to accept their excuses. The level of personal performance is a management issue. The behavior of all people is consistent with the design of management for that person. People aren’t because they are; they are because management allows them to be that way. If there is no accountability, then most people will establish their own agenda and act it out. The result will be management having to make excuses for the lack of productivity.” I wish you could have seen the look on those people’s faces. As they continued around the room, those who hadn’t produced their numbers didn’t blame anyone else. Do you think that happens very often? Do you think that some in management blame their people for the lack of productivity? I hear it on a consistent basis. The reality is the lack of productivity among the people is simply a picture of the lack of leadership. Without accountability and a common agenda there is only confusion that weakens the company from the inside out. |

I have a question for you: Do companies lose business because of price or because of the lack of quality customer care? My research says it is the lack of quality customer care. Price is not an issue as long as it is competitive. What price does become is an escape route for a company who doesn’t want to address the real reason they are losing their business. Many are good at getting the business, but poor at growing the business. I ask salespeople all the time, “Do you have any customers who could be doing more business with you, but are buying from another company a product they could get from you? If so, why are they doing that?” The answer has several faces, but the most common is the disconnect that happens once the customer has signed on as a customer. It’s like dating! Look at the quality of attention that is paid in the beginning, BUT look at how that attention diminishes after they say, “I Do!” When complacency sets in, caring starts to weaken. Do you think customers notice the lessening of the attention? In the research I did for my new seminar, When You Care, They Know, I heard it over and over again. The stories I was told about quality attention in the beginning and then no response after the business journey had been established. Relationships take attention. When the attention diminishes so does the feeling that one is important. When the customer falls out of love with what the relationship has become, they will divorce the company they were in partnership with and move on. So, my question is: What does it take to keep the Romance alive and growing between the company and their customer?

The numbers of people starting their own business is continuing to grow in record numbers. The challenge is most who start their own business don’t understand how to create or run a business. They have come from a “worker” mentality and find it very challenging to cross the bridge to an “owner” mentality. The result is a constant struggle to get the business started and make enough money to live on. For the past few months I have been working on a new seminar, Learning To Treat Your Business Like a Business! For years I have watched as people have left jobs to create their own business, only to find themselves overwhelmed by what building a business demands. Until your business becomes a business all it is, is a thought you keep throwing money at hoping something will happen. That creates a high level of personal frustration and stress. Let me share with you two pieces of information from this new seminar. First, when is a business, not a business?
Second, when will a business become a business?
If your business is simply a playroom, you will soon find yourself not wanting to play in that room! |

I’m nervous about the future of our country. I look around and see so many people struggling and not a lot of our elected leaders showing much concern about what THEIR people are going through. It seems like the rhetoric is stronger than the actions. It appears that those who are suppose to be guiding our country are more concerned about party politics than resolving the issues that are causing many to struggle beyond their ability to control. I am not saying that the war on terrorism is wrong, but I believe we are fighting a war in Iraq we cannot win. Recently, I read where the war could cost you and I as much as a trillion dollars. Do you realize how much money that is? Do the people in Washington understand what that money could do within our own borders? I am really confused why politicians play politics with our lives. I’ve felt in a Presidential election year the attention turns to improving the economy; don’t think that is going to happen in 2008; I feel the democrats want the economy to stay bad, so they can blame the republicans for the mess. This is not a time to punish Americans in order to play politics. This is a time for all our leaders to stand together and work to bring order to an economy that needs some serious attention. Oh well, I guess I have rambled enough. I will just continue to pay money to a government that doesn’t understand how to run a business or the meaning of financial responsibility.
