A Personal Note From Richard

Well, It’s Time To Do It Again

Are you glad 2006 is over? If you were to describe what 2006 meant to your life, what words would you use? Was it a year of growth, maintenance, retreat or self-destructive behavior? If you look at the four rooms of your life: Business, Family, Social and Personal, how would you rate each of these rooms? Growth, maintenance, retreat or self-destructive behavior? What would you consider your greatest accomplishment in each of these rooms?

These are not just questions; they are a mental and emotional review of your year. Too many people don’t understand the need to sit and review the year they have just added to their personal history book. If you don’t review and understand what was and what wasn’t, the tendency is to repeat that year, rather than improve on it. Each year should have a tag of understanding to it. Example:
• 2006 was the year I ______.
• 2006 will be a year I remember as the year I _____.
• The one thing I will take from 2006 where I improved the most will be _____.
• The one thing I wanted to achieve in 2006 in each of my rooms that I didn’t achieve was ______.

Reviewing the previous year allows you to have a calmer presence as you move forward in your new year. Without an honest review and understanding of what 2006 meant to you, you will enter 2007 confused and dragging unresolved parts of last year into your new beginning. When you understand what 2006 was to your life, you will be able to establish the direction you want your new year to go.

Please realize the reason most people continue the previous year in their new year is the lack of review and understanding. What you will accomplish in 2007 will mostly be controlled by what you understand from 2006. If you don’t bring to 2007 a clear understanding of what was and wasn’t achieved in 2006, you will be unclear about how to start 2007.

As you start your journey through 2007, here are some guidelines to use to design the meaning of this new gift of time.

#1: Design in your mind what you want to be able to say about 2007 on December 31, 2007. Remember, begin with the end in mind. When you plan a journey you need to know where you are going. It is not important you know each and every turn, but that you know where you want the completion point to be.

#2: Draw from 2006 the top three lessons you learned in each of your four rooms. Remember, lessons are the insights you implemented to create an improved behavior. Too many people stare at what went wrong with the previous year, rather than what went right. Right is always more powerful than wrong. The greater your emphasis on your lessons the easier it is to improve on them.

#3: Don’t hit the ground running; walk into your new year with a manageable pace. Remember, clarity demands a pace you can manage. Running into the new year will GUARANTEE you will start the new year with confusion. Start with confusion and watch how challenging it is to slow down and find the clarity.

#4: Sketch a dream; don’t just write goals. Remember, goals without a mental sketch of what you are working to achieve, leaves you unable to understand how to connect events to your life. A dream is the sketch your imagination uses to connect events to the journey. Goals become the defined pathways between the sketch and the achievement. Goals are not simply statements you write and then seek to connect. They are the next step after the sketch is drawn.

#5: Surround yourself with others who are supporters of your journey. Remember, when the challenges set in, you need a fan club around your life to cheer you on with presence and understandings. No matter how strong you are, there will be moments of doubt that will attack your desire. When those moments occur, you need to be able to reach out and feel the mental and emotional hugs of those who believe in you.

#6: Before you say “yes” to anything pass it through the question that determines either confusion or clarity. Remember the question, will this feed my confusion or strengthen my clarity? This is more than simply a question to ask; it is a question of impact. Every decision you make creates a pathway for you to travel. The greater your clarity, the simpler and less stressful your life becomes.

Well, here you are. You are standing in a time of “Newness” or “Sameness.” The pathway is your choice and you will make that choice. How do you know which you have chosen? Study your behavior. Remember, Behavior Never Lies!

Leadership Thought

If you want to read a very interesting book on leadership, get a copy of John Kotter’s new book, Our Iceberg Is Melting. The story is about a colony of penguins who were living in the frozen Antarctic. The story is built around one penguin whose curiosity couldn’t be contained. His research said the iceberg the colony was living on was slowly melting. His challenge was to convince the other penguins that the home they thought was safe was slowly melting and the life they had had for a long time was slowly being destroyed from beneath.

Fred was one of the penguins, but he was different; Fred was unusually curious and observant. He wasn’t like the other penguins who just went from day-to-day accepting that everything was okay and there was nothing to be concerned about. Fred had discovered from his exploring the iceberg from the bottom, that it was slowly melting and it was just a matter of time before what the colony thought was a safe haven was a disaster waiting to happen. As much as he tried to get the leaders of the Colony to listen, they didn’t want to be disturbed with such thoughts.

What a powerful book dealing with change. It is a book each person in a leadership role should read. It is the responsibility of leadership to make sure their people are prepared for the unknown. Too many who call themselves a leader are actually the protector of sameness. They would rather live in a world that is slowly dissolving, rather than preparing their environment for change that will happen. When leadership isn’t committed to research and improvement, they are creating a disaster that will happen. When leadership becomes comfortable with “what is,” they lose the imagination necessary to keep the company growing.

I challenge you to get the book Our Iceberg Is Melting and read it.

Family Thought

I have an idea … for couples only!

I want to bounce an idea off of you. Most of you have heard me say, “We need to get back to strengthening the family.” I have watched many nod their head in agreement. For sometime I have wanted to put together a couple’s weekend, where couples can come and experience insights and information designed to improve the quality of their relationship. Would this be something you would be interested in participating?

If I could show couples processes to improve their communication, strengthen the emotional connections, gain insights into how to prepare for the tomorrow of your relationship and build a stronger foundation of mental, emotional and spiritual support, would this be of value to you?

Would you please let me know? I am mentally sketching out a weekend in 2007 for couples only. Would you be willing to invest $795 a couple for three days with me strengthening your relationship? Please, let me hear from you about this idea.

Strategies for Successful Selling

A Sales Thought…

Resistance! What an interesting word. How common do you think resistance is to most people? Do you think most people are open to changing their life? How many times have you seen a person slip into a comfortable routine and design their life to stay there?

For people in sales, resistance to change is a death trip. One of my private coaching clients is a sales manager and we have had several conversations about how salespeople get into their routine of customer calls, routine of who they see, routine of what they do and in the process lose sight of the big picture of building business, even with existing customers. I believe there is always more business to be done beyond what one is doing.

Resistance becomes a behavior designed to emotionally fight anything that is different from what one has been doing. What causes people who are intelligent, knowledgeable and talented to resist what they know is right for them to do?
• Reacting to anything they are not comfortable with.
• Existing in a circle of sameness that has been accepted.
• Staying if familiar surroundings; not willing to take risk.
• Investment isn’t made in self improvement.
• Scared of the unknown.
• They have become mentally lazy.

A Personal Note From Richard…

I want to say a GIANT word of “Thanks” to each of you who have had a presence in my life in 2006. 2006 was a great year for me; the people I had the privilege of sharing time with were some of the highest quality of people I have ever had the honor of speaking to. Thank you for what you brought to my life and the growth you brought to me. Thank you for investing in yourself through the resource material you brought into your life. The investments you make in yourself will strengthen your clarity and help you create a presence that has presence when you are not present. I hope our journey together will continue and through the spirit of togetherness we can bring a greater sense of value to each other and to those whose lives we touch. Thank You From The Bottom Of My Heart!

Richard's StarMaker 2007 Conference

UPDATE!

From Richard —

Recently, my computer crashed and I hadn’t back up the files for several weeks; when it crashed, I lost everything – including the first two sessions of StarMaker that I had completed.

I thought to myself, “Why did this have to happen? I have spent countless hours working on these two sessions.” I have to tell you I was beside myself; if I had only backed up the data.

Now, I know why I lost those two sessions; they were not the right material for those sessions. I have just completed Session 1: Motivation & Depression. Here is what I have come to understand. The opposite of motivation is depression. Now, I am not talking about clinical depression, but pure down in the dumps. When this happens to a person, they are truly out of sync. Session 1 is going to explore how this depression happens and a step-by-step plan to get out of the dump if one finds themselves there.

Session 2 is what I am working on now; it is about the connection between Motivation and Inspiration. I am really liking this material.

You don’t want to miss StarMaker 2007, July 20-22 at the world acclaimed Doral Spa and Golf Resort in Miami, FL. This really will be one of those WOW experiences in your life. Don’t procrastinate; space is very limited.
