A Personal Note From Richard

Your #1 Choice In 2006

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I know it is halfway through the month, but I wanted to share with you this is going to be a great year – if you want it to be.

As you have reviewed your 2005, was it a year of growth, maintenance, retreat or self-destruction? When you look at the four rooms of your life (business, family, personal and social) which descriptive term best suits each room? For me, 2005 was a great year of learning. As I review 2005, I see a lot of great things that happened. This was definitely a year of growth.

Have you written goals for 2006? If so, how different are they from the ones you wrote for 2005? Did you have any major goals you didn’t achieve? I find most people write goals because they have been taught that is what you do. For some strange reason many believe if you write them, they will become a part of your everyday life. That is so far from the truth. Most who write goals have either given up on them or laid them aside by the middle of February. Why? The answer is really simple. They were not really goals! They were simply words written because you felt you needed them. You don’t really need goals; you need direction. Most goals are about what you are going to do without a starting point to get it done. The key is not writing goals; it is having a connection point in your imagination that creates a pathway forward, not in circles.

All of this is really about making one choice for 2006. It is a simple choice that will take a lot of discipline. You have heard me say on numerous occasions, “The #1 enemy in the human life is confusion.” In reality it is what you wrestle with day in and day out. It is the most common creator of emotional discord. It is what keeps you trapped in the Circle of Sameness. What most don’t want to face is confusion is a choice. It is not an event; it is not an occurrence; it is not a situation you are working through. Confusion is a choice!

Each day as you get up and face your life you make a choice. I am going to feed the confusion in my life or I am going to strengthen my clarity. Whether you want to agree with that or not, it is the choice you make. As you make that choice, you then implement behaviors to make sure your choice happens. It sounds strange that anyone would choose to complicate his or her life with confusion, but it happens. I bet you have even done it!

I have asked many people, “Why do you choose confusion over clarity?” and here are the top answers I have been told.

They live in a world controlled by fear. Fear is your #2 enemy in life. It is an emotional closet you lock yourself in and refuse to open the door. Fear is a collection of emotions that won’t allow you to see beyond what you think will happen. Fear feeds confusion! As long as you can’t see beyond the blind moment you are standing in, you will be frozen in your emotional clutter.

The second reason people choose to feed their fear is emotional entanglements. The stacking of emotions is another way to blind your life to what is really happening. Every time you chose to not complete an event or situation, you take all the emotions you were feeling and just stack them to the side. They don’t go away; they just create another point of clutter that keeps your imagination from being able to show you the pathway to achievement.

The third reason people choose to feed their confusion is the fact they are trying to escape, rather than confront their life. I have said it for years, “Everything you think you are running away from you are actually running toward.” I am not sure most understand what those words are saying. To move forward you must have a clear path. To experience growth you must have a pace that allows you to complete, not push aside or restack the events and issues of your life. Emotionally running doesn’t create a pace you can manage. It doesn’t allow you the clarity you need to see the pathway that is actually always in front of you.

The last reason people choose to feed their confusion is they lack the desire. You will not have the discipline necessary for growth until you have the strength of desire. Desire is the combination of your dream, your passion and your willingness bound together through the courage to act in spite of your fear. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the internal strength to act in spite of the fear.

Are any of the above four reasons true about you? How often do you get lost in your world of confusion and find yourself unable to control your life?

Recently, I was speaking in New York and as I always do, make the comment about confusion being your #1 challenge. As I was packing my projector, this gentleman walked into the room, came over to where I was, paused and then said to me, “I don’t understand why you make confusion such a big deal. It is just a part of life. It is and it will always be. I think you just have to learn to live with it.”

Not even looking up I responded, “Then what you are saying to me is you have no choice in life. Life is and you must just accept what happens. Is that just another form of not wanting to be accountable for your life?”

There was no reply from him, so I continued, “If I accept what you are saying, I would have to just throw in the towel, lay down and tell life to just keep running over me. I don’t think that was what I was placed on this earth to do. I was placed here with intelligence, talent and the ability to bring value to others and myself. Confusion takes that away from me. I choose not to live that way. Confusion is a choice and I choose not to live in it.”

Can you accept that confusion is a choice you make and then implement behaviors to maintain it?

Do you understand what confusion steals from your life?

  • Clarity
  • Opportunities
  • Now thinking
  • Freedom
  • Understanding
  • Stability
  • Internal peace
  • Other people
  • New adventures

Each one of these is a part of your life designed to bring you happiness, fulfillment and freedom. Without them you are limited in what you can achieve. Confusion doesn’t just show up; you choose it and then implement behaviors to keep confusion fat and happy.

Wouldn’t you rather live a life filled with clarity, rather than confusion? It is possible, but not without you daily facing your behavior and before you make a decision put it to the test. Will this decision feed the confusion in my life or strengthen my clarity? If it is about feeding your confusion, you don’t do it. It is just that simple!

What do you think would happen to your life if you chose clarity over confusion? I promise you the results would be:

  • Calmness
  • Lessons that would free you to achieve your dream
  • A sense of purpose to your life
  • Results that keep the growth happening
  • Internal peace
  • The freedom to be you
  • Yesterdays filled with clarity for today

Okay, do you get it? You have a choice to make in 2006. You are either going to feed the confusion in your life knowing if you do, it will continue to trap you in your Circle of Sameness, or you can choose to strengthen your clarity. If you choose to strengthen your clarity, you will get a life filled with positive results, fulfilling rewards and a sense of completion that frees you to excel beyond your wildest expectations.

Which are you going to choose? AND, you will choose one of the two. You can count on that fact!

Leadership Thought

Creating A Common Agenda

What happens when you have a group of “leaders” who understand the need to work together, but because of their immaturity and personal agendas refuse to work together? Do you think their pettiness will punish the people who are looking to them for leadership?

In my 27 years of living this crazy life and working with the people and companies I work with, I am still amazed at how those who have been given the responsibility to lead don’t!

It is a fact you can’t argue with. All human lives collide at the point of agendas. When there is not a common agenda, there is going to be confusion; that confusion, if not addressed, will manifest its self in conflict. That conflict will steal the positive energy from the environment and replace it with a negative presence that will hamper the quality of the product, lower the moral and allow the negative to gain space. When that happens, the company becomes a reactive environment filled with people conflict.

The responsibility of leadership is to prepare the environment for growth. To achieve that they must be establishing a common agenda and monitoring that the agenda is the guiding force. Yes, there are going to be personal agendas, but those must be connected to the common agenda. If one’s personal agenda is not tied to the common agenda, there will be division, confusion and conflict.

How do you, as the leader, create this common agenda?

A
Address any area of agenda conflict
G
Get clear with the people on the agenda
E
Express consistently your commitment to the agenda
N
Negative must not be tolerated in any form
D
Don’t give in to threats
A
Always keep the agenda in front of the people

Remember, people aren’t because they are; they are because leadership gives them permission to be the person they are at work.

Home-Based Business Guide

Network Marketing Thought

The weekend of January 7th it was my privilege to travel to Baltic, CT and speak for Phyllis Nelson’s Arbonne partners. I have spoken for many Network Marketing meetings, but this was a unique gathering. In Arbonne when you reach the level of Regional Vice President, you receive a white Mercedes. I was asked to participate in her celebration.

What made this a unique experience was the spirit of the people. In many of the Network Marketing groups I present to, there are a lot people there, but many are filled with a sense of doubt that is over-riding their desire to “do it.” This was not the case here; those 100 people who sat with me for three hours on Saturday, were not only present, but also connected from their inner desire to grow. It has been along time since I have spoken to a group where the hunger was so strong. They resisted some of the information, but didn’t let that take them mentally away. I could see it in many of their faces; the information was uncomfortable, but the desire to improve and achieve fought through their fears and they came back with a great amount of courage.

This is what is missing in so many who see the world of Network Marketing as their “ticket” out. They think they want it, but when the fear attacks and the negative questions start running through their life, they can’t fight through. The result is them backing off, rather than their desire allowing them to fight through.

Thanks Phyllis for allowing me the opportunity to stand in the presence of people who can see beyond their fear. WOW! What a powerful morning.

Strategies for Successful Selling

Caring Is Not A Concept; It Is A Demonstration

Recently, I was working to book a trip on Continental Airlines through their reservation agents. First, the person I was talking to had a challenge with the English language. They were challenging to understand and spoke so quickly I couldn’t understand what they were saying. I asked the agent if she would mind slowing down just a little because I was having a challenge understanding her. The pause and sigh in her voice told me she was not happy with what I had just said.

Please don’t take what I am about to say wrong, but when people are in a customer connection position, they should have command of the language they are speaking. I believe if you are going to work for an English speaking company, you should be able to speak the language.

I was working to book a flight from San Antonio to Houston to Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic. There was a connection that worked, but the plane from San Antonio to Houston was a little plane and I don’t like little planes. There was a jet twenty minutes earlier, but because her computer didn’t show that as the connection, she didn’t offer it. When I called her attention to it, she got upset and told me, “This is the connection my computer shows and that is what you will have to take.”

My response was, “I fly 200 days a year and I know if there is an earlier flight that connects to the other flight, I can take it.”

“Yes, you can take it, but you have to pay point to point.”

“Why?”

“Because my computer doesn’t show me that connection.”

“Just because your computer doesn’t show it, you can construct it as a thru fare and it will work.”

“I can’t do that. Now, what do you want me to do?”

“I want you to put in the earlier connection and build it in as a thru fare.”

“I can’t do that.”

“You can’t or you won’t?”

“Listen,” she reacted in a loud voice. “I have told you what I will!”

“Tell you what I will do, I won’t continue this conversation with you. All I want to do is put together this itinerary and it is evident you don’t want to help me. So, let’s just stop here.”

“That is fine with me,” was her response to me and she hung up.

I called back, got another agent and without any hassle put together the flights. I thanked her for her willingness to work with me. I explained to her what had just happened and her words were, “I am sorry you had to go through that. We have some people here who don’t want to expend the effort to help the customer. If it means they have to go out of their way, they won’t do it. I apologize for the way she treated you.”

I appreciated her apology, but it didn’t make up for what had happened. If the purpose of a sales driven company is to help the customer, then that means the investment of the time to help them. Too many in customer care positions really don’t care about the customer. Then, companies wonder why there is customer defection. Most customers don’t leave because of price; they go elsewhere because of the lack of people caring about their experience. When the internal representative doesn’t care about the external customer’s experience, there is going to be confusion, which will lead to customer disappointment that will affect the company’s profitability. I guess some companies think that is the cost of doing business. I think it is the result of people not caring about people, because what they are doing is not a crusade to take care of the customer. It is simply a job to make money and they don’t care how they do it. There is something wrong with that customer picture. Caring is not a concept; it is a demonstration.

Messages for Successful Living

A Personal Message From Richard

I really want to say a GIANT word of thanks to each of you who read the MindJogger Newsletter and take your time to respond to different aspects of the newsletter. That means a lot to me. I hope as each time I write an article it will offer a point of clarity for you.

I enjoy reading your emails as you share with me how different thoughts offer you an insight to address an area of confusion in your life. Confusion is your #1 enemy and must be what you protect yourself from wrestling with. You really can achieve that by slowing down and asking that directional question designed to keep you from moving in the wrong direction – Will this feed my confusion or strengthen my clarity? I hope you sense and understand the power and freedom that comes from asking that question.

Again, thank you for taking your time to respond. I enjoy hearing from you.

Remember, in clarity there is the freedom to achieve your dream.

A Message From Dan Carapellucci

Business with Olympic Proportions

by Dan Carapellucci

Olympic athletes fascinate me. As a manager, I always want to know what creates their exceptional levels of performance. Although an equally important topic, I’m not talking about what motivates these athletes, such as fame, achievement or potential endorsements. I’m talking about what behaviors differentiate Olympians from other great competitors.

For example, are you aware that Olympic archers shoot between two beats of their heart? To a less skilled competitor, this behavior won’t necessarily make a difference in performance. (This is similar to the unfortunate fact that Tiger Woods’ golf clubs probably wouldn’t add a lot to my game.) When you’re up against all of the top archery competitors in the world, the ability to time your shot between two heartbeats won’t differentiate your performance; rather it becomes fundamental to success.

This is where some businesses make a critical mistake. Top contenders consistently display behaviors that differentiate them from the entire field, but these same behaviors are fundamental to other top contenders. The key to continued success is not in knowing how to differentiate yourself from the field, but how to differentiate your business from the other top contenders. Get that down and we’re talking gold medal for your business!

A Personal Journey

Richard,

I love getting your daily quotes and reading my mindjogger calendar each day! I am amazed at how much more I can accomplish with my time. In addition, you gave me the courage to start confronting my parents every time they make negative comments towards me. Not only is it WAY easier than I ever imagined, but I feel much more emotionally free and it is improving my relationships. Thank you!”

— Esther from Washington

A Client’s Thought

“Richard,

Thanks Richard for your willingness to "speak the truth in love" as it relates to the real meaning of Christmas, especially since we live in a world that does everything possible to crowd out Christ and the things of God. I sure do appreciate it, and I wanted to be sure and share my thoughts. God bless at this truly wonderful time of year! And may you and those you love have a memorable and blessed Christmas!”
