I’ve done it; you’ve done it; everyone has done it. We all have procrastinated! It is one of those issues in life we have told ourselves we weren’t going to do and have done it. Ralph is a great example. He is smart, talented and filled with good intentions. I met him at a program I was doing in Las Vegas. When I looked up from the table where I was busy packing my stuff up, he was standing there with this big grin on his face. He smiled and said, “Did you have to be so rough on me today? I mean, I don’t even know you and you spent your morning talking about me. I am your poster child for procrastination. It seems like it has become an every day part of my life. I get up with my To Do List, look at it and start pushing things off into tomorrow.” |

There was this pause as if he was waiting for me to respond to what he had just said. I looked at him in silence and then responded, “If you don’t mean to procrastinate, then why do you do it?” There was this look of puzzlement on his face. He opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out. He paused and then said, “I know what it does to me and others. I understand how dangerous it is, but it has just become a part of my everyday routine. I am not saying I plan on doing it; it just happens. I really do want to get things done. Having stuff unfinished just sucks the life out of me. It causes me to not know where to start and makes it a problem to finish anything.” Ralph is no different from so many I have met. They live in a world designed to confuse and frustrate their space and the world they share with others. Procrastination is not something that “just is.” Procrastination is a choice that a person makes. You don’t have to use tomorrow as your starting point; that is a choice! That is a choice YOU make; it is not forced on you. So, it creates a very interesting question: Why do smart, intelligent people choose to procrastinate? From my years of working with people let me share the most common reasons one chooses to procrastinate. The first reason one procrastinates deals with the lack of passion for what one is doing. Passion is such an important part of having the right energy to fight through the moments of doubt and uncertainty. Without passion one will lack the inner resolve to continue through the tough terrain. One will procrastinate when their reasons become stronger than their desire. There are always justifications for not doing what you set out to do. When those reasons are stronger than the desire that started the journey, postponing action becomes okay. Procrastination becomes okay when others have planned the journey for you. For desire and passion to create personal power, one must be living his/her own dream. When the script is handed to another, it will lack the personal commitment that is a must. When one is cluttered with other unfinished journeys, procrastination becomes a way of coping with all the incomplete actions. Clutter is a huge time thief and makes one feel it is impossible to get everything done. The result is pushing things to the side with the intention of getting back to them. Too many times the stack becomes so overwhelming, one doesn’t know where to start. Procrastination is a behavior. For any behavior to be made okay, one must rationalize that behavior. Most of the time the rationalization is a lie one tells self in order to handle the truth of their behavior. Another reason people procrastinate is a fear of confrontation. It is amazing how many would rather walk away than confront the issues. What they fail to understand is anything that isn’t completed has continuation. That means it doesn’t go away and every time it reappears procrastination becomes an issue all over again. Sadness with one’s life is another reason people procrastinate. When life is not about happiness, fulfillment and freedom, there is a sense of sadness to it. That means a lull in one’s energy. With that lull comes procrastination. Most new adventures begin with an inner sense of excitement, but when that inner sense of excitement wears low, so does the feeding of energy that creates the consistency of action. When that happens it becomes okay to stare and not act. The result is procrastination. Another common reason I have found people procrastinate is the fact they are involved in the wrong journey. On the surface the journey looked good, but once they got into the action of achieving the journey, they realized this was not for them. Too many won’t admit that fact, turn around and find the right path; they will continue to plow forward knowing they are going in the wrong direction. That makes procrastination okay. Procrastination becomes okay when there is no sense of urgency to completing the action that was started. The lack of urgency gives one permission to spend time doing other things. The thought is I will get around to it. Without a sense of urgency cluttering one’s life with an unfinished events becomes a way of living; after all good intentions are good intentions. They can also be a lie. Another reason people procrastinate is a tired spirit. With people being pulled in so many different directions today, personal tiredness is at an all time high. When one is tired, it is easy to look, let out a sigh and walk away. It is not they don’t want to do it; they just don’t have the energy at that moment. When tiredness sets in, it is okay to make tomorrow the staring point. It helps relieve some of the guilt one feels when they know they should, but don’t. The last of these reasons is the fact the environment they are in doesn’t hold them accountable for their behavior. Without accountability there is the lack of discipline. Most people are not good personal managers; they need an accountability partner. Without that partner it is easy to talk self out of what one knows they should be doing. Okay; ponder these reasons for procrastinating and see how many you are using to justify your procrastination. I will continue this next month with what you must do to control procrastination. |

Recently, I have seen several situations where a person was hired because of their talent and then placed under a manager who wouldn’t let them use their talent. Why would someone who has talented people around them that could strengthen their presence put a talented person on the shelf? Here are my thoughts. There is jealousy! When a weak manager comes in contact with a talented person, many times the jealousy causes them to put the person on a shelf; the fear is their lack of talent will be exposed. A new person will bring new ideas. Do you have any idea how many managers are stuck in a routine and don’t want to get out of it? Talented people bring new ideas that if implemented, would force the routine manager to have to change. That is not part of their agenda. The manager has lost their passion for what they are doing. When that happens a new talented person brings a higher level of energy. The manager who lacks passion cannot let this new person inspire the environment; their energy must be turned down. Environment is the way the manager wants it to be and they don’t need anyone coming in upsetting their apple cart. To make sure this doesn’t happen, the manager must steal some of the spirit of the new talented person who is filled with positive energy. Negative behavior has set in and management doesn’t want to face that fact. New people bring a new sight plan. Talented people are always looking for ways to improve and in the beginning their energy can be stronger than the negative energy that has prevailed. If one doesn’t want to face the negative, the best way is to suck the positive out of the person. The manager has actually quit and doesn’t want to have to go back to work. We all know a person can quit and still show up for work. All one has to do is look at the amount of sameness that is happening. When a manager allows sameness to override improvement, it is a sure sign they have quit and are just hanging around. A new talented person will expose that fact with their behavior. What should a manager do with a new talented person?

One would think that with all the training emphasis on taking care of the customer that those who are customers would be taken care of. One would think that a business wouldn’t tolerate anyone who played with their reputation. One would think that those who were given the responsibility of leadership would hold people accountable for their behavior and would empower management to let people go who don’t care about the customer. What has happened to us? Business after business complains about the lack of profitability; they talk about so much business being lost to other countries. They can talk all they want, but until they face the issue of “non-caring people standing in front of people who want to spend money and enjoy the experience” nothing is going to improve. The external customer has the RIGHT to expect to be taken care of. They have the right to EXPECT to be treated with respect. Yet, rather than face their issue, they would rather cut their workforce in order to build their profits. Why can’t they understand this is just a band-aid; it won’t solve the issue; it will just increase the frustration of doing business with them. When are companies going to learn that profit is the result of quality people doing a quality job of customer care. I guess they will learn it when they are no longer in business. |

So, you want to own your own business and be your own boss? Sounds great, but are you really ready to hire yourself and fire yourself if you don’t work out? Building a Home Based Business is not as easy as it sounds. Why? One big reason is most who come into the world of Self Employment have never been self employed. They have worked for others and have never had to face the critical aspects of being their own boss. They have always got a paycheck that someone else wrote; they have really not had to depend on their own efforts to make the money to pay self. They have had others create the path they were traveling; all they had to do was show up and do the job. Now, they have to clear the jungle and keep it from growing back; that means they have to be organized, disciplined, focused, willing to risk it all and open to be and accepting the challenge of change. WOW! What a lot to be open to. Most who don’t make it in their own business don’t fail because they couldn’t do it; they disappear because they didn’t do what they needed to do. Being one’s own boss means being able to be both boss and employee. Think that could be challenging? |

Know what? I think I am going to run for President! My platform will be simple – I will tell you when I am lying and when I am telling the truth. How novel would that be? Isn’t it amazing how to be President you have to be “politically correct.” What does that mean? It means you have to be all things to all people. You can’t afford to offend anyone, because their group won’t support you. If they don’t support you, they won’t give you the millions you have to have to run a campaign. |
I wonder what our founding fathers would think about all this? There weren’t any PACS or special interest groups or people whose vote had to be bought. There was just a group of people who were committed to gaining freedom. There were just these people who wanted a country founded on and grounded in principles. They were Americans; no they weren’t originally from here, but they came here and banded together to form a nation based on principles that made faith a major part of all they did. That is why the statement “In God We Trust” was so important. Now, we want to take God out of everything, because it might not be politically correct; someone might be offended if we talk about God. Yes, we accept others, but I believe when you come to our country, you come as an American; if you don’t want to be one of us, go back where you came from. Stop expecting us to become you! You came here and in doing so became one, an American. I wonder if the founding fathers would even recognize the country they worked so hard to build? Why can’t we stop being colors and just be people! Why can’t we stop fighting over what we don’t have and work together for the good of the country, not just want we want? Why don’t we stop trying to be all things to all people and just be true to our beliefs and principles? Yep! I think I am going to run for President. I know I will get one vote! |
